How to Tailor Your CV to a Job Description in 20 Minutes
A fast, repeatable method to adapt your CV for each application: decode the advert, reorder your evidence, mirror the right keywords and check the result.
Sending one CV to every job is the most common reason strong candidates are overlooked. Recruiters spend seconds on a first scan, and applicant tracking systems look for evidence of the specific skills in the advert. A tailored CV makes the match obvious.
Tailoring does not mean rewriting from scratch. With a solid master CV, it takes about 20 minutes per application.
Before you start: build a master CV
- Keep one long document with every role, project, result and skill you could ever use.
- Write each achievement as action plus result, with a number where possible.
- Each tailored CV is then a selection from this master, not new writing.
Minutes 1 to 5: decode the advert
- Highlight the three to five requirements that appear first or are repeated. Those are the real priorities.
- Note the exact wording for key skills and tools, for example "stakeholder management" or "Power BI".
- Separate essential requirements from nice-to-haves.
Minutes 6 to 15: match your evidence
- Rewrite your profile summary in two or three lines that speak directly to the role's top priorities.
- Move your most relevant achievements to the top of each job entry.
- Use the advert's wording where it truthfully describes your experience.
- Cut or shorten bullets that do not support this application.
Minutes 16 to 20: check it
- Can a recruiter see your fit for the top three requirements within ten seconds?
- Is every claim true and something you can talk about in an interview?
- Is the file named clearly, such as Firstname-Lastname-CV-Role.pdf?
- Save the tailored version against the application so you know exactly what you sent.
Do not overdo it
- Never add skills you do not have. It will surface in the interview.
- Avoid copying the job description word for word. Mirror key terms, not whole sentences.
- Keep the format simple so applicant tracking systems can read it.
