How to Prepare for a Competency-Based Interview (STAR Method)
A clear plan for competency and behavioural interviews: how to predict the questions, build STAR answers from real evidence, and practise without sounding scripted.
Competency-based (or behavioural) interviews ask you to prove a skill with a real example: "Tell me about a time you...". They are common in the UK public sector, the NHS, large employers and graduate schemes, and increasingly used everywhere.
The good news is that they are predictable. The questions come almost directly from the job description.
Step 1: predict the questions
- Highlight every skill or behaviour in the job description and person specification.
- Turn each one into a question, for example "teamwork" becomes "Tell me about a time you worked with a difficult colleague".
- Expect five to eight competencies. Prepare at least one example for each, and two for the most important.
Step 2: build STAR answers
- Situation: one or two sentences of context.
- Task: what you were responsible for.
- Action: what you did, step by step. This should be the longest part, and it should say "I", not only "we".
- Result: what changed, with a number if possible, and what you learned.
- Aim for about two minutes per answer.
Step 3: practise without sounding scripted
- Write your examples as bullet points, not full scripts.
- Practise out loud, and record yourself once to check timing and filler words.
- Reuse strong examples for different questions by changing which part you emphasise.
- Prepare two or three thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer about the team and how success is measured.
On the day
- It is fine to pause and say "let me think of the best example".
- If you do not have a work example, use one from study, volunteering or community work, and say so.
- End each answer with the result. Many candidates stop at the action.
