How to Look for a New Job While You Are Still Employed

How to run a focused, discreet job search alongside a full-time job: protect your time, stay confidential, handle interviews and leave on good terms.

Searching while employed puts you in a strong position. You are not under pressure to accept the first offer, and employers often see current employment as a positive signal. The challenge is time and discretion.

The answer is a smaller, more focused search: fewer applications, better targeted, managed in short regular sessions.

Protect your time

  • Block two or three fixed sessions a week, for example two early mornings and a weekend slot.
  • Aim for a handful of well-targeted applications each week rather than dozens of rushed ones.
  • Use direct outreach and referrals, which often lead to conversations faster than portals.

Stay confidential

  • Never use your work laptop, work email or work phone for your search.
  • Do not search or apply during working hours on company systems.
  • Update LinkedIn gradually, and use its option to signal openness to recruiters only rather than publicly.
  • Ask new employers not to contact your current employer for a reference until you have an offer.

Handle interviews

  • Ask for early morning, lunchtime or late afternoon slots. Many employers will accommodate this.
  • Request video calls for first rounds to reduce time away.
  • Use annual leave for final rounds rather than inventing reasons to be absent.
  • If asked why you are leaving, answer positively: focus on what you are moving towards, not what you dislike.

Leave on good terms

  • Do not resign until you have a written offer and any conditions, such as references or right-to-work checks, are cleared.
  • Check your notice period in your contract before agreeing a start date.
  • Resign in person or by call first, then confirm in writing.
  • Offer a clean handover. Your old manager may be a reference for years.
