UK Immigration News 2026: What SPath Users Should Watch

A current SPath briefing on the visa-route changes that matter most for international graduates, skilled workers, healthcare candidates, founders, and scale-up applicants.

Last checked: 18 August 2026. UK immigration rules and guidance are moving quickly, so SPath articles separate evergreen strategy from current-route updates.

The practical takeaway is simple: users should still search for licensed sponsors, but they now need to pay much closer attention to salary thresholds, occupation eligibility, route-specific rules, and timing.

What changed or needs attention

  • Skilled Worker: GOV.UK now lists the usual salary requirement as at least £41,700 per year or the going rate for the role, whichever is higher. Some applicants may still qualify on lower salary rules, including the new-entrant style route where the floor can be £33,400.
  • Graduate route: GOV.UK says the route lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, then 18 months for applications on or after 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates still get 3 years.
  • Health and Care Worker: the route still covers doctors, nurses, health professionals, and eligible adult social care roles, but care-worker occupation codes now need especially careful checking because some medium-skilled care roles are framed around extension, update, or switch situations.
  • Innovator Founder: endorsement still depends on proving that the business idea is new, innovative, viable, and scalable, with endorsing-body check-ins after 12 and 24 months.
  • Global Talent: this remains a non-employer-led option for people who can qualify through a prestigious prize or endorsement in academia/research, arts and culture, or digital technology.
  • Scale-up Worker: GOV.UK lists a salary requirement of at least £39,100 per year or the going rate, whichever is higher, and the first sponsored job must be with an approved scale-up business for at least 6 months.

What this means for job seekers

The market is becoming less forgiving. A sponsor licence on its own is not enough: the employer, role, salary, and route must line up. That makes targeted search, application quality, and early route planning more important than broad application volume.

SPath should be used as a job-search and preparation system, not as legal advice. For case-specific decisions, users should always check GOV.UK directly or speak to a regulated adviser.
