UK High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa Guide 2026

How the HPI visa lets recent graduates of top global universities work in the UK without a job offer or sponsor, who qualifies, what it costs and how to use the time well.

Last checked: 10 October 2026. The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is one of the few UK work routes that does not need a job offer or an employer sponsor. If you graduated recently from an eligible university outside the UK, it gives you two or three years to work, change jobs and build UK experience on your own terms.

That freedom is also the challenge. Without a sponsor, the job search is entirely yours, and the visa cannot be extended. The people who get the most from it arrive with a target list, a UK-format CV and a plan to move into a longer-term route before it expires.

Who qualifies

  • You need a degree equal to a UK bachelor's, postgraduate degree or PhD from an eligible non-UK university on the Home Office Global Universities List. UK universities are not eligible.
  • The degree must have been awarded in the 5 years before you apply, and the university must be on the list for the year your qualification was awarded.
  • Since 4 November 2025 the list covers non-UK universities in the top 100 of at least two of three rankings (Times Higher Education, QS and ARWU). The 2025 list has 80 universities.
  • Your qualification must be checked by Ecctis.
  • English at CEFR level B2, raised from B1 for applications made from 8 January 2026.

Key numbers

  • Visa length: 2 years for a bachelor's or master's, 3 years for a PhD.
  • Annual cap: 8,000 applications a year, counted from 1 November to 31 October.
  • Application fee: £880.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: usually £1,035 a year.
  • Funds: at least £1,270 held for 28 days, unless you have already been in the UK on a valid visa for 12 months.

What you can and cannot do

  • Work in most jobs, look for work, be self-employed and do voluntary work.
  • Bring your partner and children as dependants.
  • You cannot extend the HPI visa, and it does not lead to settlement on its own.
  • You cannot switch into HPI from a Graduate visa.
  • You may be able to switch to a Skilled Worker visa before your HPI visa expires.

Use the time as a job search, not a holiday

Because the HPI ends without extension, the real goal for most people is a role that can later move onto a Skilled Worker visa. From 22 July 2025 that generally means a graduate-level job (RQF level 6) paying at least £41,700, or £33,400 for qualifying new entrants, and the employer must hold a sponsor licence.

That means planning from day one: targeting licensed employers, tailoring applications to UK expectations and building a track record that makes an employer want to sponsor you when the time comes.

How SPath Global helps

  • Search UK employers licensed to sponsor, so your HPI experience can lead to a longer-term role.
  • Check salary and occupation-code fit for a future Skilled Worker switch with the pay calculator.
  • UK CV checklists, outreach templates and PathTracker to run the search from your first week.

Check before you apply

Rules, fees and the universities list change. Confirm your eligibility on GOV.UK before applying, and speak to a regulated immigration adviser for advice on your own case.
